Smart Film Dry Installation Guide

Official installation protocol for PDLC smart film on architectural glass. Follow the required tools, environmental conditions, and application procedures to achieve flawless optical performance and long-term durability.

Required Installation Tools

Before starting, ensure the following professional tools are prepared and completely dry:

  • Specialized Glass Scraper & Heavy-Duty Blades: For removing stubborn glue residue, paint, or hidden particles from the glass surface.
  • Professional Squeegee (Felt-Edge Recommended): For flattening the film and securing segments without scratching the surface.
  • 99% Anhydrous Isopropyl Alcohol or Specialized Glass Cleaner: Dedicated consumables for deep cleaning. Note: If water is used during the cleaning process, the glass surface must be wiped completely dry to leave zero residual moisture haze or film.
  • Lint-Free Microfiber Cloths: Essential for preventing lint shedding and surface contamination.
  • Precision Utility Knife / Precision Blades: For clean trimming, edge adjustments, and opening wire channels.
  • Wire Strippers & Electrical Insulation Tape: For cutting, stripping, and securely wrapping wire joints.
  • Premium Neutral Structural Glazing Silicone & Caulking Gun: For the final waterproof edge-sealing process.

I. Installation Environment & Preparation

  • 1. Strict Water ControlThe glass surface, installation tools, and the entire workspace must remain absolutely dry. Wet installation or application in high-humidity environments is strictly prohibited.
  • 2. Two-Person OperationUnpacking, handling, and installation must be performed by at least two people. Handle with care. Do not fold, sharply bend, or apply localized pressure to the film, as this will permanently damage the internal liquid crystal layer.
  • 3. Dimension VerificationBefore installation, re-verify all dimensions. The finished smart film size should ideally be 2 mm smaller than the actual glass size on all four sides to leave an adequate margin for edge sealing.
  • 4. Field Trimming & Edge Cleaning (Anti-Short Circuit)If the smart film dimensions exceed the glass edges, it can be trimmed and adjusted on-site. Whenever possible, trim with the self-adhesive side facing upward, as this helps prevent edge burrs from bonding and triggering a short circuit risk. After trimming, hold a razor blade at approximately a 90-degree perpendicular angle to the film edge, and gently scrape the trimmed edge once in a clockwise direction. This operation removes residual burrs and prevents the edge materials from sticking together, ensuring the smart film switches normally upon power-on for a stable and reliable performance.
  • 5. Pre-Installation Power TestInspect the film for any visible scratches or defects, and perform a power-on test to ensure the film switches smoothly between transparent and opaque BEFORE applying it to the glass.

II. Glass Cleaning & Application Protocol

  • 6. Deep Cleaning (Scraper Requirement)Clean the glass surface thoroughly. Remove any glue residue, dust, or stubborn stains to ensure the surface is free of particles, lint, or moisture haze. Mandatory: Use the specialized glass scraper from the toolkit to scrape the entire glass surface completely to eliminate microscopic debris.
  • 7. Segmented Film Peeling (Precision Control)The smart film has protective backing layers on both sides. Before operating, check the labels to clearly distinguish the 'Self-Adhesive Side' from the 'Non-Adhesive Side'. The self-adhesive side must face the glass. Peel the protective backing from the adhesive side progressively—only 5 to 10 cm (2–4 inches) at a time. Use a squeegee to flatten and secure that segment before peeling the next section. Never remove the backing all at once, as the strong static electricity generated will instantly attract surrounding airborne dust.
  • 8. Immediate Bubble RemovalSmooth the film from the center outward simultaneously during application. If any bubbles appear, they must be squeegeed out immediately. Do not wait until the entire sheet is applied to remove bubbles, as delaying this can cause permanent local delamination.

III. Electrical Wiring & Safety Standards

  • 9. Power Supply MatchYou must use the dedicated transformer provided by us. Connecting the film directly to 110V/220V mains power is strictly prohibited and will destroy the product. Never reverse the high-voltage input and low-voltage output terminals.
  • 10. Insulation ProtectionAll wiring joints must be tightly wrapped with multiple layers of electrical insulation tape to prevent moisture and dust penetration, eliminating any short-circuit risks from exposed wires.
  • 11. Backup Wires PreservationThe smart film comes with two sets of wires. One red/black set is used for the primary power connection; the other red/black set serves as a backup. Do not cut the backup wires. Wrap them securely with insulation tape and store them neatly within the window frame for future maintenance access.
  • 12. Electrode CareHandle wire leads and copper foil electrodes gently. Never pull forcefully on the wire leads or the copper foil electrodes extending from the film. Avoid applying continuous tension to the base of the electrodes during wiring.

IV. Edge Sealing & Substrate Restrictions

  • 13. Dedicated Sealing Glue OnlyOnce the film is installed, the entire perimeter and all electrode areas must be completely sealed for waterproofing. You must use a premium neutral structural glazing silicone that meets three strict criteria: (1) Zero shrinkage, (2) Neutral curing, and (3) Zero organic solvents. Using standard acidic silicone is strictly prohibited—it will instantly corrode the liquid crystal layer and turn the film edges black.
  • 14. Substrate RestrictionsDo not apply the silicone glue directly onto wooden frames (which deform with moisture) or electroplated aluminum surfaces. For these materials, using rubber gaskets or glazing strips for physical fixation and sealing is recommended.

V. Additional Compliance

  • 15. Follow DocumentationThe project foreman and installation crew must read these precautions thoroughly before starting and strictly follow the provided Installation Video and Standard Wiring Diagrams.
